Cuba's Central Bank Grants First Crypto Payment Licenses to 10 Firms
Cuba is opening the door to crypto for business payments. The country's central bank has approved 10 companies—nine small and medium-sized enterprises plus one joint venture—to use cryptocurrencies for international transactions.
The licenses are valid for one year and can be renewed. Companies can only use crypto for cross-border payments tied to their main business activities. They must also work through a virtual asset service provider (VASP) licensed by the central bank.

Quarterly reports are required, detailing transaction amounts, currencies used, and intermediary information. Cuba started regulating virtual assets in 2021 and began allowing licensed use of bitcoin and other crypto platforms in April 2022. This marks the first time Cuban companies have received direct permits to operate international payment services.
