UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer supports a pause on cryptocurrency political donations amid concerns
UK Halts Crypto Political Donations Over Foreign Interference Fears
The UK is putting a pause on crypto political donations. Prime Minister Keir Starmer says the government will suspend them to tackle risks tied to illicit finance and foreign meddling.
This is meant to be a temporary move. The idea is to buy regulators some time to hash out transparency rules. Once those rules are in place, parties will have to return any crypto donations they've received. Miss the grace period? Criminal penalties could follow.

The shift comes after a government-commissioned review flagged concerns that crypto transactions can mask where money is really coming from—making it tougher to enforce donation rules and spot foreign sources. The Reform Party had previously accepted tens of millions of pounds in crypto donations, prompting cross-party lawmakers to call for an "immediate ban," calling it an "unacceptably high risk" to electoral integrity.
