Bitcoin Depot Hacked, $3.7M in BTC Stolen in Second Security Incident

Bitcoin ATM operator Bitcoin Depot has been hit by a security breach. In a filing with the SEC, the company disclosed that hackers stole about 50.9 bitcoin—worth roughly $3.67 million—on March 23rd.

Attackers gained access to the company's IT systems and obtained credentials for its digital asset settlement accounts, then moved funds without authorization. Bitcoin Depot said it has activated its incident response plan, brought in outside cybersecurity experts to investigate and lock down remaining assets, and notified law enforcement.

The company says customer platforms and user data were not affected. The incident has been deemed materially significant to operations, potentially leading to reputational damage and costs tied to legal, regulatory, and response efforts. This is at least the second known security event for Bitcoin Depot. A previous breach in 2023 exposed personal data of 58,000 users.
